Tea Meeting

On Tuesday evening, a public tea-meeting was held at the Congregational Church, Lonsdale Street West, Melbourne. The meeting was presided over by Mr. Thomas Fulton. After tea, the Rev. Thomas Odell, pastor of the church, read a report of their proceedings during the past twelve months.

At their last meeting they had 81 members. Since that period they had received 70 members, of whom 50 had been honorably dismissed from other churches, and 20 had been admitted after confession of faith. They had dismissed 25 members, some of whom joined other churches. Their present number of members was 151.

They had been enabled during the past year to collect a congregation and build a church at Kyneton. The church had recently been opened under the pastorship of the Rev. Robert Anderson.

The sum of £325 11s. 10d. due to the treasurer at their last meeting, and the mortgage of £750 upon the property, had been paid off. There was a balance also from the fund for the maintenance of public worship in the church, of £40 15s. 8d.

The first resolution, pledging the meeting to renewed exertions for the spread of the gospel, was moved by the Rev. William Jarrett, and seconded by the Rev. William Burns Landells.

The second resolution, recommending the adoption of means for the promotion of the temporal and spiritual welfare of new arrivals, was moved by the Rev. William Moss, and seconded by Mr. Crate.

The third resolution, proposing the establishment of a fund, to be maintained by the monthly contributions of the church, for the relief of cases of necessity, was moved by Mr. Garron, late of Adelaide, in a brief but powerful speech, and seconded by Mr. Blair.

Mr. Odell moved, and Mr. Landells seconded, a vote of thanks to the chairman. The doxology having been sung, the meeting separated.
